The Willows 2004 Semillon - Case of 12

MWH Wines: Established in 1936, the Willows Vineyard is run by Peter Scholz, a sixth generation descendant of 19th century immigrants from Germany.  Over 100 acres are located on the banks of the Para River near the village of Light Pass.  Here the Semillon vines are over 70 years old.  The Scholz family home was originally a private hospital, as Peter's ancestors were doctors of some note.  Indeed , Johann Gotfried Scholz who had emigrated from Silesia in 1845 was an expert bone setter, something that was in great demand in the Prussian army of which he had been a member. Today the old family hospital remains Peters' home.

Peter's first winemaking job following graduation from Roseworthy was with Peter Lehmann at Saltram in 1979. Here he entered a dynamic environment, working with Andrew Wigan and Charlie Melton. His philosophy is to produce wines with silky, ripe tannins rather than grip.  Softness and stability are key. 50% of the wine is matured in second and third use barrels resulting in smooth, drinkable wines, not horrible blockbusters. Today the Scholz family has come full circle - from healing with their hands to offering the 21st century's latest natural remedy: red wine!
