Taylor's 1977 Vintage Port - Corroded labels

MWH Wines: An undoubtedly splendid vintage, the 1977 vintage Ports combine power, elegance and refinement with the ability to live long, impressive lives.  The best, such as the Taylor 1977, have much more to give although they are, finally!, ready to enjoy.  Nutty tones are just starting to creep into this full, complex, delicious wine.  Overripe bramble fruit, spices and a touch of minty spirit, this is a leading 1977 Vintage Port. Stunning.

'Remarkably backward yet still impressive when young,” are the wise words of Robert Parker, brought on by tasting youthful Taylors. I remember buying the 1977s and at the time I was told to just put them down for two decades and leave them alone. Forty years down the road, the ’77 is beginning to show the cracks of age. Mellow is a word that comes to mind, although only in the sense that the power of this wine is giving way to old age. The rich, dry fruit is persistently black, the tannins worn, the finish an aromatic mix of tea, floral notes and spice that persist on the palate for several minutes. Tasting this wine is more of a privilege than anything else. If you missed its 40th anniversary it seems clear it will effortlessly make it to its 50th in 2027.
